yesterday i was looking at some magazines - i wanted to look at the pictures mainly, to see some pretty dresses and be entertained. i emerged from the pile of magazines with a few thoughts:
a) all these celebrities are having a TON of fun, why can't i?
b) wow, it wouldn't hurt to lose a few pounds would it?
c) being rich means you can do anything
then i caught myself and thought "what the HECK?!?" these magazines have such a huge impact on the reader, without them even realizing it. isn't that scary? because really, it DOESN'T matter that j.lo buys coffee at starbucks, or that brad pitt might have a thing for angelina. how does that stuff edify our lives?! it doesn't! but..these headlines subliminally penetrate the minds of even the most level-headed person. we then shape our thoughts on these things and emotions and actions are brought forth as a result. this creeps me out. i mean, i have been taught that worldly things are nothing - riches, fame, fortune - yet my human nature is still intrigued by them. as a Christian i sometimes struggle with the world - but ultimately i must learn to live a life fashioned after God's precepts...this is what He wants for me! there are so many times when i give in, i let these things govern my thinking, my actions...i just need to remember that ' i can do all things through Christ who strengthens me' - even overcome crazy worldly temptations!
i still can't get over the power of those magazines, however...
